England, England, wherefore art thou?
From quiet ashes of those
Who dreamed the stones
Raised high at Stonehenge,
What mists hide
King Arthur’s haunts,
Where now stand noble knights?

England, England, wherefore art thou?
In whose bloody dreams
Of ancient Celtic queens,
Recall Boudicca and
Icini’s screams
Against an armoured
Roman legion?

England, England, wherefore art thou?
Remember battles - remember changes?
Invading William,
Fallen cousin Harold,
Scottish Anne
Who lost her head,
Quartered William Wallace?

England, England, wherefore art thou?
Elizabeth rallied men and ships
Sank the Spanish Armada,
A legacy of grit that sent
Men and ships to save
Brothers stranded on
Dunkirk’s sandy shores.

England, England, wherefore art thou?
Remember well the
Constant Hell of
Nazi blitz and bombs
As people all,
Stood meters tall
Against the ugly war.

England, England, wherefore art thou?
When faced with wrongs
Who sang the songs
That bolstered battered spirits
To fight the fight, to do what’s right
Though death might
Be their bitter end?

England, England, wherefore art thou?
